How Capillary Tube Mat Systems Work

Capillary tube mat systems are advanced radiant heating and cooling systems that use water as the energy carrier. They work together with heat pumps and other low-temperature energy sources to provide highly efficient and comfortable indoor climate control.
Instead of relying on forced air like traditional air conditioning systems, capillary tube mats use large surface areas—such as ceilings, walls, or floors—to gently transfer heat through radiation. This creates a stable and uniform indoor temperature with very low energy consumption.

Water Hydronic Radiant System
At the core of the system is a closed-loop hydronic circuit. Warm or chilled water is generated by a heat source—typically an air-source heat pump, ground-source heat pump, or boiler—and circulated through the system. Because the system operates with relatively low water temperatures, it is highly compatible with renewable energy and modern high-efficiency heat pumps.

System Configuration and Function
A complete capillary tube mat system typically includes the following key components:
1. Heat Pump (Energy Source)
The heat pump acts as the heart of the system. In winter, it produces warm water for heating. In summer, it provides chilled water for cooling. This makes the system reversible and suitable for year-round operation.

2. Buffer Tank (Optional but Recommended)
The buffer tank stores thermal energy and stabilizes water temperature. It reduces frequent start-stop cycles of the heat pump, improving system efficiency and extending equipment lifespan. It also ensures more stable operation when load conditions change.

3. Water Distribution System (Manifold)
The manifold distributes water evenly to each capillary circuit. It ensures hydraulic balance and allows independent control of different zones or rooms within the building.

4. Capillary Tube Mats (Radiant Surface)
Capillary tube mats are made of densely arranged thin polypropylene tubes. They are installed close to the surface of ceilings, walls, or floors.
Once activated, these surfaces become large radiant panels that distribute heating or cooling energy evenly across the room. Because of the extremely large heat exchange area, the system can operate efficiently with low energy input.

5. Intelligent Control System
Smart thermostats and control units regulate indoor temperature and humidity. In cooling mode, a dew point controller is especially important, as it prevents condensation by ensuring surface temperatures remain above the dew point. This intelligent control guarantees safe, stable, and comfortable operation in all seasons.

Heating and Cooling Operation

In heating mode, warm water flows through the capillary mats, turning building surfaces into gentle radiant heat sources. Heat is transferred evenly to occupants and objects without creating air movement or noise.
In cooling mode, chilled water absorbs excess heat from indoor spaces. Unlike traditional air conditioning systems, cooling is achieved through radiation rather than cold air blowing, resulting in a draft-free and quiet environment.

Why the System Is Highly Efficient
Capillary tube mat systems are highly efficient because they combine:
Low-temperature heating (28–32°C water)
High-temperature cooling (16–29°C water)
Large radiant surface area
Reduced air movement and energy loss
Compatibility with heat pumps and renewable energy
This allows heat pumps to operate at optimal efficiency while maintaining excellent indoor comfort.

A Modern Solution for Comfortable Buildings
By integrating heat pumps, hydraulic distribution, radiant surfaces, and intelligent controls, capillary tube mat systems provide a complete indoor climate solution.
They are widely used in residential villas, high-end apartments, and modern low-energy buildings, offering:

  • Silent operation

  • Uniform temperature distribution

  • High energy efficiency

  • Healthy indoor air quality

  • Year-round comfort

As building standards move toward lower energy consumption and higher comfort requirements, capillary tube mat systems represent a forward-looking solution for sustainable heating and cooling.
